Wireless Technology - Is it the future?

There is no doubt the interest and usage of Wireless technology is growing at an incredible rate. Wireless LAN technology is currently the latest buzz topic and many education establishments and businesses have already gone down this route in a bid to offer more flexibility to their working environment.

It's true, Wireless does have some great benefits. Installing Wireless means minimal disruption to the working environment. It eliminates the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings and can be carried out quickly and efficiently.

Wireless gives you extra mobility and flexibility and you won't be tied down to a set workstation. As long as there's power to the PC or Laptop, you'll be able to access the network from any point within the workplace, classroom or IT suite.

One thing to bear in mind is that Wireless is complimentary to your existing LAN infrastructure. It's not a direct replacement for your existing cabling.

Wireless LAN is the perfect solution for temporary classrooms, training rooms and listed buildings and due to the short time required to install a Wireless solution you don't have to install out of normal hours.

How does Wireless work?

A Wireless network is made up of three components: the access point, PCMCIA or PCI card and the antenna.

Access Point - this is the part that you invariably need to connect to your network and as a rule of thumb you can anticipate the following:

10 to 15 users per Access Point
30 meters radius connectivity from the Access Point
Connectivity speed decreases with distance

The Access point comes with a choice of an integrated or external antenna depending on your requirements i.e. do you need a point-to-point connection between two buildings or to simply run an internal LAN within a single classroom or office.

PCMCIA Card - this provides an integrated and removable antenna for mobile or Laptop devices.

PCI Card -this fits into the PCI slot on traditional desktop PC's.
Yagi Antenna - if you want to connect between two buildings then the Yagi high gain directional antenna is suitable for mast or building mounting and is used for point-to-point Wireless connectivity with line of site. This gives coverage of 5km and above.
Omni Directional Antenna - this antenna is ideal for a campus site as it provides coverage in a spherical pattern with a distance of 500m.

How much does it cost and can you install it for me?
We can install your Wireless LAN solution for you. Prices for installation are dependent on the site survey. Depending on location, site surveys are normally carried out free of charge.

If you have any further questions or require a site survey please contact our IT Specialists.
